Our Story

Solid Tango is the longest-running tango school in Boise, Idaho. Founded in 2012, Solid Tango has had a consistent mission of growing the tango community in Boise, and growing new students into seasoned dancers who are elegant, a joy to dance with, and who have the confidence to express themselves and dance anywhere in the world.

We began as simply "Sunday Night Tango" in 2012 at a venue in downtown Boise called "The Crux," which no longer exists. Tommy Smith, the founder, had started learning tango 6 months previously. Having become obsessed with the dance, he had a simple motivation for starting the event: he wanted to dance more, and have more people to dance with!

When the Crux closed, the event had to find a new home, which ended up being Solid Grill and Bar, also downtown. While the school is not officially affiliated with the restaurant, we identified with the name "Solid." To us it represented what we were all about: having a solid community, teaching solid technique, and producing solid dancers. And so, we also adopted the name, and Solid Tango was born.

Over the years, Solid Tango eventually grew from a single Sunday night event (now called "Solid Tango Sundays") into a full program, offering beginner series, special topics classes, social dance events, and inviting visiting instructors. But our goals have always remained the same: grow the community, produce amazing students, and share our love of tango with anyone who will come, listen, and dance with us.
